Speculations, Part 1

Dreams

Dreams are an incredible way that our Creator has to communicate with us. They should always be a source of gratitude and inspiration and never of worry. Dreams are blunt and can reveal things we hide from ourselves and others, and this can be a cause for shock or concern. What does the book of Job, in the Bible, says about dreams?

Job 33:14-17 God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man;

On my troubled teenage years almost every night I would awake up with a terrifying dream. To interpret it I read all kinds of books and literature about dreams and it’s interpretations but I admit that it was a terrible waste of time and energy and I didn’t get the peace of mind I sought. It left me more worried and confused than ever. Until one day I read something very simple and childlike: “Dreams are either inspired by God or the devil”. Of course, to people that don’t believe in God or the devil it seems pure nonsense, but I grabbed that sentence and I stopped trying to interpret my dreams and letting them worry me.

Today I know a bit more than that. Dreams are parables. Jesus always taught in parables, simple stories that would reveal deep truths, and today He keeps on speaking in parables to each one of us in a very personal way through the dreams. If we don’t pay attention to these dreams, they remain in our subconscious mind and I believe they will play a good influence on our daily decisions but we will miss important guidance if we just reject them, and God has to repeat the same lesson over and over again using different methods and ways to get us to understand. If we remain stubborn and hard headed it may take years and many painful situations to learn something that we could have learned in a few days.

The reason why some dreams are classified as nightmares or unpleasant and archived in the shelf as “dreams to forget”, it’s only because the dream exposes a truth that destroys the beautiful image that we so earnestly built for ourselves. It’s almost like getting offended with a friend that said something about you that we didn’t want to hear, the only difference is that our Creator is a million times more loving and faithful than any other friend, He doesn’t stop talking to us, or leave us in the cold if our attitude is not correct. God is expert in using dreams to destroy our idols, the false images we built of ourselves, but we stupidly go and rebuild it all over again the next day.

Dreams are always given in love, because God is Love, e even when I make stupid decisions in a dream that cause me to end up in a hot spot, instead of getting worried I thank the Lord for revealing that stupidity in my character, knowing that the only way to change and avoid the dangers of acting that way is by accepting His power to transform me. That brings peace of mind and concrete results in my life.

Very rarely dreams are really evil nightmares or terrors by night, and these can be very unpleasant. I think that one way to avoid it is to make sure you don’t go to sleep upset with somebody, feeling resentful or with negative images in your mind. For me is very important to spend a minimum of five to ten minutes before going to sleep, ignoring my tiredness and desire to sleep, to focus on positive and good things, forgive, re-connect with the love of God and try to let Him speak to me. That makes a big difference.

In conclusion: dreams are the main way that God uses to communicate with us. They are given in a parable form, a simple story, a little movie with a message. Sometimes the message is very clear, other times we have to ask Him to help us understand the meaning.

God is not vengeful or cruel; He has no pleasure in seeing us worried or in “sending us to hell” because of our sins. He is infinitely more loving, tolerant and open that even we are to ourselves or to others. There is no comparison. He just gives us warning to help us avoid horrible situations in the future. If we don’t hear the first time, He tries this and that to get through to us and never gives up. So I enjoy having dreams knowing that practically all of them are inspired by God.
